Hi there! This is going to be a short post today, but I was listening to the radio on my drive in to work, and Macklemore’s “Thrift Store” started playing. For those of you who haven’t heard it, check out his music video below or else the rest of the post isn’t going to make much sense!
With all the music albums out there promoting the lavish lifestyle, it’s kind of refreshing when a new song celebrates saving money, all of course, while looking “incredible”.
Macklemore is definitely going against the norm, especially since artists rap about dropping dough on cars, cribs, and bling. The song is unique because it actually promotes the exact opposite. He raps about spending as little money as possible and finding treasures in thrift shops instead. In a strange way, Macklemore has made saving money cool again!
His catchy tune speaks to tough times, “I’m gonna pop some tags, only got twenty dollars in my pocket.” Translation: When you don’t have a lot of money, you have to make your dollar stretch further. One way to do that is to buy things on the cheap!
He uses sarcasm to make valid points too. For example, is it really necessary to pay $50 for a T-shirt?
“They be like, Oh, that Gucci – that’s hella tight.
I’m like, Yo – that’s fifty dollars for a T-shirt.
Limited edition, let’s do some simple addition.
I call that getting tricked by a business.”
Macklemore suggests that this kind of spending is silly and that you can “look fresh” without having to break the bank.
While I’m not proposing that we only shop at thrift stores from now on, there’s something to be learned about his frugal approach. Whether it’s being less wasteful, eating out less, or being more mindful of how much we spend on clothes, we can all benefit from placing more emphasis on saving over spending.
